Java moss is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly aquatic mosses. It is hardy, adaptable, and widely used in freshwater aquascaping for its versatility and low-maintenance care.
Appearance:
Java moss has irregular, thread-like stems covered in small, bright to dark green leaves. Its growth is somewhat wild and tangled, giving a natural, unstructured appearance. Over time, it forms dense mats that can drape or spread depending on placement.
Aquarium Use:
This moss can be attached to driftwood, rocks, mesh, or left free-floating. It is ideal for creating moss walls, tree-like structures, or providing shelter for shrimp and fry. Java moss also helps improve water quality by trapping debris and absorbing nutrients.
Care Requirements:
Java moss thrives in low to medium light and does not require CO2, though added CO2 can speed up growth. It grows well in a temperature range of 20 to 30°C (68 to 86°F) and prefers a pH between 5.0 and 8.0. Growth speed is moderate to fast, especially in higher light and stable water.
